Until 2009 nobody had a reliable figure, because the surveys that asked were run by people selling the things. Two nationally representative US studies then put it at 52.5 per cent of women and 44.8 per cent of men — the men mostly during sex with a partner rather than alone.

Use was associated with better scores on measures of desire, arousal, lubrication and orgasm, and with a higher likelihood of having had a gynaecological exam in the past year. The direction of that last association is not established, but it is the finding the authors chose to lead with.
