Men use a vibrator with a partner, not instead of one
1,047 men were asked, and the assumption runs the wrong way.
A nationally representative survey of 1,047 American men aged 18 to 60 found that 44.8 per cent had used a vibrator at some point. The number worth stopping at is the next one: of the heterosexual men who had, 91 per cent had done it during foreplay or intercourse with a woman rather than alone.
The same study found that men who had used one recently scored higher on four of the five domains of the International Index of Erectile Function — erectile function, intercourse satisfaction, orgasmic function and desire. It is a cross-section, not an experiment: it cannot say whether the device helps, or whether men whose sex lives are already working are the likelier ones to bring one in. Both readings fit the data, and only one of them gets quoted.
